RESEARCH: CINEMA 16.

Cinema 16 displays both classic and award winning films on DVD. This was put together by Luke Morris who collaborated films from British and European directors to put on to DVD as another platform for viewing them. The DVD was widely successful and sold over 5,000 copies within the first year proving its popularity by the mount of people that bought a copy of the disc. Luke Morris decided to make the DVD as he said "when you think of the number of young short-filmakers working today, there's a captive audience who want to analyse these films." and he wanted people to have the opportunity to view and analyse the short films as many times as they wished and to look at the film from different perspectives. There is now a new section that has been added to the DVD which incorporates American short films with European and British film sector.

RESEARCH: DIRECTORS LABEL AND LONDON CALLING.

Directors Label is a series of DVDs showcasing short films, music videos and video art. I have looked through the DVDs that showcase the work of several directors including Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry.

I found it interesting that these directors have made short films as well as music videos. It seems to me that several of the music videos are like short films that tell stories, often with a sort of artistic leeway that the music video form allows.

For example, Michel Gondry in Human Behaviour for Bjork develops a fantasy narrative that relies heavily on visuals built on commonly recognised fairy tales. It takes narrative to a new level where visual aesthetics are just as important as the narrative. Film makers often cut their teeth on music videos and short films in order to establish themselves.

For example, I studied some recent short films by new film makers in London supported by Film London's production scheme London Calling. Nour Wazzi is one filmaker who cut her teeth producing and directing a number of short films and music videos, including the Film London-backed, award-winning short Habibti with Hiam Abbass (The Visitor), Jimmy Akingbola (Rev) and Yasmine Almassri (Caramel).

RESEARCH: WHAT ARE SHORT FILMS?

I made my presentation using NewHive to present my information in a visually pleasing way for the viewer. I researched short films then designed this using a simple and easy presentational tool. Here is the link to my internet version. The pictures involved are winners of the 'Short of the Week Award' which is a website displaying new short films.
